Investing in our Infrastructure

South Carolina’s infrastructure – including our ports, roads, and rail – represents a central engine of our economic growth. We have unparalleled distribution and logistics capabilities: one of the nation’s fastest-growing container ports, two innovate inland ports, 2,300 miles of rail lines and more than 41,000 miles of state-maintained highways. 208 million people live within two days drive.

Working with the Trump administration, we recently secured $49 million for the Charleston Harbor Deepening Project in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ 2018 Work Plan – one of the most significant wins for Team South Carolina this year.

As governor, I am working to:

  • Prioritize the efficient expenditure of tax dollars on roads by reforming the Department of Transportation Commission. I vetoed the gas tax – the largest tax increase in state history – because it failed to address systemic flaws at DOT. As governor, I have also appointed six new commissioners who share my belief that conservative, pro-taxpayer reform is needed to bring accountability to the system.
  • Deepen the Charleston Harbor to become the deepest port on the East Coast, allowing for more the influx of more container volume.
  • Complete I-73 to enhance access to the Grand Strand and Pee Dee regions, creating as many as 30,000 new jobs and pumping billions into our economy.
  • Complete the I-526 extension across Johns and James Islands.
