Securing Our Prisons

We face new threats from inside our prisons. Today, cell phones are so concealable that they can be smuggled inside correctional facilities or thrown over the wall, allowing inmates to continue their criminal activity from inside.

To secure our prisons, I have ordered the South Carolina State Guard to assist the Department of Corrections (DOC) by staffing the exterior of correctional facilities, and by manning or monitoring from fence towers to prevent contraband from being delivered. I also issued an executive order allowing DOC to hire more officers, and I am working with Director Bryan Stirling to jam phone signals in the vicinity of our prisons.
